The Art of the Resume!

Happy Monday People!!!! We are smack in middle of WINTER here in the Midwest, but feeling hopeful in the prediction of early spring from our favorite rodent from Pennsylvania.


Last Thursday we rolled out our new Facebook Live series called: Coffee Talk! Charity was able to give some insight on how to build and present a resume that can make you the Belle of the Ball!


We aren't going to repeat the comprehensive chat she gave. (To check it out, click here; ) But I am going to go over the 'HIGHLIGHT REEL", so to speak.


1. Email address. We are assuming everybody has one. If you don't, send me a note, and ill help you set one up. Employers are paying more attention to small detail than you think - so an email address that talks about anything lewd, vulgar, suggestive or downright strange, ( ***WARNING SOME MAY FIND THE EXTERNAL LINK TO BE OFFENSIVE****; Examples here ) unfortunately could put a sour taste in the hiring manager's mouth.


If your current company doesn't have professional email- and I strongly advise against using company email for personal use- gmail, outlook, yahoo, icloud or other free online servers to get a free email address.


First Name. Last name @ Free email .com BOOM! That will look a lot better than other suggestive addresses I have seen.


2. Work History.


Only Place your last 5 years experience on your resume or your relevant experience for the position you are applying for. Time is a finite resource, and those who you are trying to impress only have a limited amount dedicated to this decision (of hiring you).


GET.TO.THE.POINT. Who are you? Why are you a good fit? What relevant work experience do you have?


3. Certification/Schooling: If you have a high school diploma and nothing else, don't worry about the education section. It's better to leave it off entirely and focus on the strength of other areas of the resume.


Acquire training. Never, ever turn the down the opportunity for free learning. Most employers are willing to PAY for you to get relevant training once on the job. Never turn it down.


Withdraw certain training from your resume.


-WAIT....WHAT?


Ya, if you went to the "Insert your state/city name here school of bartending" and are applying for a professional job outside the food/hospitality industry; odds are no one is going to care about that schooling.


4. Intro/Cover Letter:


The "Objectives" section, or " Introduction" section of a resume is the FIRST thing that captures eyes.


Let me repeat: The "Objectives" section, or " Introduction" section of a resume is the FIRST thing that captures eyes.


Make it POP! Make it memorable, and make it compelling. This will INCREASE the likelihood that your resume gets read, and will change the reader's mindset.


"BUT HOW DO I MAKE IT POP??!?!?!?!?!?!"


Keep it: Short, To the point, Relevant.


Add buzzwords regarding your skills and accomplishments, and talk about how you will be better than your predecessor and all other applicants.
