So unless you've been living under a rock, or Siberia, its no secret that we are currently in a SORCHING HOT job market. Unemployment has hit 50 year lows, and companies can't possibly CLONE people fast enough to fill their open positions.
Getting a job is easy now, right? RIGHT?!?!?
Weeeeeeeeeell, not exactly.... Companies are still holding out for top quality people, especially in mid-high level pay grades.
What was that ? Did you hear it?!?!? If that was the sound of your bubble bursting, I am sorry! But FEAR NOT (!!!!) , I have great news!
Lots of companies out there are now screening candidates based on SOFT skills over Hard Skills.
Wait.....WHAT?!?!?!? - I'm so glad you asked ! Let me explain:
Hard Skills are teachable skills, which are tangible and can be measured by exams and interviews.
Soft Skills are psychological and emotional competencies that help people kick butt when dealing with challenges and problems in professional and personal life.
WHOA. What does that mean ?!!!!!
Employers are now willing to overlook a lack of experience or education, if you're a MASTER OF SOFT SKILLS.
You are probably reading this thinking: "OK, these people still haven't given me any examples of soft skills, I'm done with this blog :S"
DONT HANG UP!!! Errrr, Leave!!! I will tell ya!
Soft Skills are things like: Creative thinking, Decision Making, Problem Solving, Humility and Relatability.
There are many resources out there to help you with these skills, but I encourage you just to READ (or use sparknotes, whatever). Some good books to start, and NO, we are NOT an affiliate site, are;
- How To Win Friends And Influence People- Dale Carnegie
- The 7 Habits of Highly Effective People - Stephan Covey
- Principles - Ray Dalio
Developing these skills WILL help you land interviews and possibly jobs you wouldn't normally be "qualified for".
